Hey guys and Gals,
Not very often do i need to get some help but here it is. I have been working on my 89 hatch getting it ready for my daughter to drive. Its been sitting for about 2 years with out running daily. I parked it when it started to smoke and had purchased my 95. I started it as often as possible. On my last trip back to Texas in June i swapped the head with one I had purchased just after it started smoking in 2007. It started and ran fine after the swap and seemed to idle smooth but had not finished connecting the exhaust system. It starts and runs now but had a series of most likely simple things go on with it while prepping it for inspection. Below a list of items checked and or replaced to correct a funky idle issue. Idles rough between 800 and 1000 rpm's sort of loops sounds like it wants to die but at speed it pulls strong enough to spin tires.

What: Ka24e
Addons: Custom cold air intake, Electric fan
Deletes: intake manifold water routing including throttle body and Emissions
Whats been changed
1. Fuel lines from pump, Filter to rail Due to fuel line being rotted away at tank and before the filter
2 Fuel filter (Weird thing Fuel in was clear fuel out was blackish)
3. plugs .35 gap Going to widden to .40 today
4. Cap and rotor and wires
5. Seafoamed intake and 4oz into tank with 6 gallons of fuel ( thinking clogged injector)
6. Pulled fule pump before replacing the lines to check tank condition...Clean tank no rust or gunk Sock looked clean.
7. Pulled AIC and checked and cleaned it.

Other weird things....Flip up lights didnt flip down in the morning...Not frozen shut...after noon they work fine.

Other then that the car drives great has great pick up and doesnt seem to miss under acceleration.....Let me know if you have any ideas. I am going to dig through my boxes I think i might have some injectors laying around we will see. Oh and the last weird thing............we lost(she) a 12mm wrench while putting on the back bolt for the exhaust manifold......Cant find it any where thinking its still there just cant find it...thinking on the exhaust or on the doghouse for the trani...But main issue is the idle that is driving me nuts

Hey Trip,

Sounds like a basic hunting idle problem.

Look for a old/cracked/leaking vacuum line that may have been damaged when you pulled the intake off to swap the head.

When ever i did jepawa's ka24de swap the car ran fine started all the time but would ide funny. Our problam was the tps.We had to swap it out cause the connections were different. So as we swaped it out we messed up the tps gasket and it casued the car to idele funny....My .02cents

Thanks guys. Still looking into it. When i replaced the head I replaced all the vacuum lines but will check them over again. I did clean the Iacv. I have an extra in my garage so might replace that if it doesn't check out electrically. Yesterday was too cold and wet to work on it.

Ok well got allot of it cleared up...here is what i found

1. Vac line from Manifold to Brake booster at the Manifold had a slight crack
2. on the AAC unit the FICD solenoid valve threads broke on the shaft.
I need an FICD valve for a KA24e if anyone has one laying around...Ill post pics
3. changed plug gap to .40...still a little eratic but will take apart the IAC again may have dislodged stuff when i did the seafoam

so trippen, how have you checked the iac. did you pull it out? and if you did, did you have to remove the manifold to get to it?

I got to it by reaching from the back of the motor to the iac. I have removed the water line connections that run between the manifold. I did this deletion when i replaced the head. this is basically what i did while doing the head R&R makes it allot easier to get to items like the IAC
